Original Resistance[ | ]
The Resistance was a rebel group in the Realm that played a huge part in starting the Crystal War. Following the discovery of crystals and their subsequent ban from commoners by the Magistrate in an attempt to ensure peace and safety, many in the Realm were furious at this choice, ultimately rallying behind Valera, the former leader of the original Paladins; who herself believed crystals should remain free for anyone to use, believing freedom to be more important than safety. After weaponizing crystals with the help of Barik and reawakening the remaining Stagalla to fight for her, Valera and the Resistance went to war with the Magistrate, starting the appropriately named "Crystal War". Valera also urged the group to take up the name and flag of the original Paladins, and while the group itself used the name, most simply referred to them as the Resistance.
Following Yagorath's defeat, the Resistance disbanded after Valera departed, looking towards a new fight over the horizon. Some of its members followed a new fight against the New Magistrate and formed the New Resistance, while the rest concerned themselves with the overall safety of the Realm, choosing to be part of the New Paladins.

Trivia[ | ]
General
- The Resistance isn't, nor ever was, intended to be more heroic than the Magistrate. The Resistance being painted in a more positive light comes from how the earlier days of the lore were more focused on the Resistance's point of view, as well as how the Magistrate in general, received more attention brought to their actions.[1]
- By extension, this means certain descriptions of the Magistrate, such as in Inara, Sha Lin, and Ying's bios, are merely their own personal opinions on the Magistrate.
- While the Magistrate generally does not think fondly of the Resistance, the same holds true in reverse, with the Resistance viewing the Magistrate as an authoritarian group taking crystals away from the citizens who have no power, which the Resistance attempts to fight for.
- In the end, it's left to the individual to decide which of the two groups, if either, they believe is more in the right.
- The Resistance doesn't technically have control over any territory in the Realm, though Greenwood has "largely shifted to the Resistance", with it seemingly now being less safe for the Magistrate to travel through.[2] The Resistance also doesn't have much influence in Marauder's Port and the Lunar Coast.[3]
- It's implied the reason the Warder Dragon didn't attack the group during Dark Tides, yet attacked Dredge, was because the Resistance hadn't tried to use the gauntlets, unlike Dredge.[4]
Members
- Grover and Makoa were revealed to have joined the Resistance in the End Times story, however, which is particularly odd, with the reason they joined never being explained.
- It was also never explained why Buck and Koga joined the Resistance.
- Though many find Evie and Pip's bios to be too vaguely worded, they were both explicitly confirmed as being members, albeit only partially in Pip's case.[5]
- Atlas, Io, Jenos, and Imani have all been seen fighting alongside the Resistance such as during Io's teaser trailer, though their main goal is to prevent the Darkness from being released and are uninterested in the war.
- Despite the Dark Tides lore cinematic showing Moji's Dragonborn skin accompanying the group, she's not part of the Resistance and is more of a neutral character.[6][7]
- Tiberius has been described as being "vaguely aligned with the Resistance", with it eventually being clarified that Tiberius was more or less specifically battling Raum alongside the Resistance, as Raum being summoned by Corvus had led to Raum being more associated with the Magistrate.
- During the Battle Suit Battle Pass, one of the challenges offered was: "Slay 14 different Paladins Champions", obviously showing the group only had 14 champions officially part of them at the time, which still holds true at the time of writing.
- Oddly, during the End Times story, Barik, Buck, Evie, and Pip aren't mentioned or implied to be present at all.
- Additionally, during the End Times event where champions were divided between Magistrate and Resistance, Barik, Cassie, Evie, Furia, Grover, Koga, Inara, and Talus were not available as Resistance champions.[8]
- As also shown during the End Times event[8][9], Kinessa, Maeve, Ruckus and Seris were available for both the Magistrate and Resistance. The former two are thought to possibly have been hired, though the latter two's reasons are unknown.
- During the Future's End update, Bomb King, Dredge, and Drogoz were added and shown fighting alongside both groups as well. The reason for all three of these characters fighting alongside the group is even more of a mystery, especially Dredge, who had just attacked the Resistance not long before.[10][11][12]
- Maeve was also seen on the Resistance's side during the Siege of Ascension Peak event.[13]
- When Siege of Ascension Peak was reintroduced as the third schism of Siege: Beyond, Pip, Grover, Koga, and Talus were not available as Resistance champions.[14]
New Resistance[ | ]
The New Resistance is the unofficial name given to a group of former Resistance members and Zhin's Thousand Hands Guild that formed following House Aico's takeover of the Magistrate. The group is led by Zhin, and although on the surface it appears they intend to fight for the freedom of the common folk (and against Ska'drin discrimination), Zhin's ulterior motive lies in taking the throne from Lian as its rightful heir.[15]

- It was never explained why Koga and Zhin seemingly have no issue working together, or why Buck joined the group despite previously leaving the Thousand Hands.
